Pizza- a word that evokes a host of emotions in anyone who love his food. Hardly any country, community or person is untouched by the magic it brings to the table. This is one of the most multi-faceted & versatile dishes that has been adapted & modified, depending where one where is eating it.
The origins of pizza are not clearly known, but it is said to have evolved from similar flatbreads in Persia and Italy. Hundreds of years ago, it was eaten as a flatbread with toppings by soldiers in a war and civilians in their daily lives. The recipe kept on transforming with age and traditions, to what we see as a drool-inducing, most loved dish.
This recipe is one of the easiest and can be effortlessly replicated by anyone. A basic pizza, with sauce as the base, and toppings of tomatoes- popularly known as Napolitana. The toppings can be anything- vegetables, meats or plain cheese.
Ingredients
All-purpose flour 1 Cup
Whole wheat flour ½ Cup
Honey 1 tbsp
Olive oil 1 tbsp
Instant Yeast 1 tsp
Salt ½ tsp
Water ½ cup
Method
Mix both the flours, honey, oil, yeast and salt together in a mixing bowl.
Add water and knead for about 10 mins to a soft dough.
Allow the dough to rest in a greased bowl, covered with cling wrap, until it doubles in size (about 45-60 mins). This si called the first proofing.
Once doubled, gently deflate the risen dough to release all the air inside.
Knead again for 1-2 mins gently and keep aside for about 30 min for the second proofing.
Roll the dough in a circular or oval shape, as per preference, into a baking tray. Dust the tray with semolina. Prick the rolled dough all over with a fork
Layer thinly with pizza sauce, choice of toppings and cheese.
